There are many risk factors. Of these, heredity is one of the greatest determinants of whether you will eventually get diabetes.
If anybody in your immediate family (father, brother, sister – or even grandparent) has diabetes, your chances of getting it are greater than the general public.
In regards to type 2 diabetes, if you are African American, you have a higher chance of developing the disease.
On the other hand, in regards to type 1 diabetes, you have a higher chance of developing the disease if you are Caucasian.
The more you weight, the greater your risk of developing diabetes.
And, as you age, you have a greater chance of developing the disease as well. Therefore, if you are overweight, you can decrease your chances of developing diabetes by simply losing weight.
